Junior volleyball teams medal at districts, seniors continue quest for provincials

Luseland, Kerrobert, Macklin, Unity and Wilkie all part of either junior volleyball District medal wins or upcoming senior volleyball playoffs that could lead to a spot in upcoming SHSAA provincial championships.

UNITY,WILKIE,KERROBERT--Junior volleyball season wrapped up with Battle West District Championships, although the initial day of competition was hampered by the weather forcing postponement from Nov. 3. Old Man Winter arrived the day that junior volleyball teams were to head either to John Paul II Collegiate in North Battleford for the girl’s competition or Spiritwood for the boy’s division. The event was rescheduled for Nov. 7, the same day forecasts issued a wide-spread snowfall warning.

McLurg teams were dual winners that day. McLurg girls won their way to championship rounds and returned home with a Battle West District bronze medal for their efforts, beating North Battleford Comprehensive High School. McLurg boys had an excellent day on the courts also winning their way to championship rounds and returned home with Battle West District silver medals for their efforts, losing in a third set in the final to John Paull II.

Kerrobert Composite School boys had an exciting finish as well as the team won bronze, by a score of 15-13, in the third set over North Battleford Comprehensive High School.

UCHS girls, coached by Rhonda Gartner, battled out the day earning their spot in the final, which resulted in a Battle West District silver medal. “That was a hard fought battle and girls gave everything they had to get to final and I was very proud of their efforts, “ said Coach Gartner.

District Championships are the final event for high school junior volleyball. 

Senior volleyball conferences and regionals

Senior girl's volleyball teams competed at their respective division's conference play downs in their efforts to earn a regional berth that could lead to the Sask. High School Athletics provincial championships.

Unity Composite High School girl's captured their conference title in Outlook, Nov. 5, beating Macklin. The storm system that erupted that weekend resulted in the team being storm stayed an extra night.  UCHS will travel to Maple Creek to compete at 3A girl's regional play downs with hopes of earning a berth to 3A provincials that will be held closer to home, in Macklin, on Nov. 18-19. Macklin girl's volleyball will also compete in Maple Creek at regional play downs.

Kerrobert Composite High School girls also advanced from their conferences held in Plenty. The team now travels to Edam for 1A regional play downs Nov. 12, hoping to earn a SHSAA provincial berth for Nov. 18-19.

Senior boy's volleyball begins their quest for SHSAA provincials starting with conference play downs Nov. 12.  Luseland will compete at 1A conferences in Medstead, while Wilkie will head to Waldheim for 2A conference play downs. There were not enough 3A boy's teams to require conference play downs, therefore UCHS will attend regional playoffs in Outlook Nov. 19. All teams have their sights set on a sport at provincial championships coming up Nov. 25-26.
