Minor hockey teams seeking to score a provincial title

Area minor hockey teams are thrilled to be experiencing a new normal season that includes the opportunity to compete in provincial playdowns

UNITY ‑ After the opportunity to play for a provincial title was iced for two years due to the pandemic, Hockey Sask. provincial playoffs are in action for minor teams in the area. Hockey Sask. says league playoffs won’t be set for another few weeks.

Kerrobert U18 are competing in the D division of provincial brackets and dropped their first game to Hillmond by a score of 5-1. As of Feb. 7, no details were received on game two. Kerrobert is also in the D division of U15 provincial playoff bracket needing to complete their series against Naicam by Feb. 17 to advance. In the U14 D division, Kerrobert was not able to overcome Muenster in their opening series so are now eliminated from provincials.

Macklin U18 are competing in the D division of provincial playdowns and face off against Lashburn with series to be completed be Feb. 17. In the U15 division, Macklin is facing Aberdeen with the same deadline of Feb. 17 to complete their series. In U13, Macklin received a bye to the second round and need to complete their series against Neilburg by Feb. 17.

Unity Lazers, U18, playing in the C division of provincial playoffs must overcome a 9-1 deficit against Clavet with the series to be completed by Feb. 18. In the U15 division, Unity Lazers won their opening series against Shellbrook Elks and now face Wilkie. The games will begin in Wilkie Feb. 10 and will return to Unity Feb. 12 in the best-of-three series. In the U13 B division, Unity received a bye to second round and won game one by a score of 9-7.  The U13 Lazers will travel back to Hague Feb. 13 for game two of the three-game series.

Wilkie U18 is currently in series to be completed by Feb. 17 against Meadow Lake, with winner advancing to play either Kindersley or St. Walburg in the U18 B division. The first game is set for Feb. 11 in Meadow Lake returning to SaskCan Arena Feb. 13 for a 1 p.m. matchup. U15 Outlaws defeated Waldheim in first round of provincials. Round 2 vs Unity starts Feb 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Wilkie. The U13 Outlaws played, and won, their first game on the road against Meadow Lake with a convincing 12-3 score. Game two of this series is in Biggar Feb. 12.

Wilkie Minor Hockey adds, “U11 are having a great league season and their playoff tournament will take place in March. The U9 Outlaws will also experience league playoffs in March. U7 Outlaws have had a busy season and will finish off the year with a home tournament the first weekend of March.”
