UFD preparing for spring grass fire season

Three motor vehicle collisions were part of the March call-outs for the Unity Fire Department

UNITY - For the month of March, the Unity Fire Department responded to three motor vehicle collisions and two STARS landing assists.

Fire Chief, Dwaine Kopp, says their team is now preparing for spring grass fire season. “Always be mindful with fires, as it is dry enough for fires to get out of control.”

People presume because they can still see snow cover and water running that the ground is wet enough to be unable to sustain a fire, however dried crop remains and dead grass are great accelerants to grass fires. Not flicking cigarettes out vehicle windows is also advised, as this is known to ignite the dried ground quickly.

Kopp also issues a reminder to drive with caution in town as with the warm weather comes kids on bikes and playing in driveways, possibly even running unaware into the street.
