Unity Composite High School pays it forward in a busy fall

Unity Composite High School continues to be a busy place with sports and activity that add to the creation of the best high school experience for students.

UNITY ‑ Unity Composite High School, through school groups, student leadership teams and staff, continues to engage students in a variety of activities meant to create the best experience for students throughout their high school years. Part of this experience includes giving back to the community in monthly efforts and actions.

UCHS hosts monthly activities that fundraise for community and provincial causes that include paying for the privilege to wear a hat in school on Fridays and a November chili cookoff to benefit the Robyn Silvernagel family to help with expenses for their newborn son facing health challenges.

The annual tradition of canvassing the town on Halloween for the "We Scare Hunger Program" is another effort that is well supported by the students and the community. This year the school gathered more than 1,500 pounds of food for the local food bank. Additionally, as part of a fall vegetable fundraiser, students offered purchasers the option to help the local food bank resulting in 109 vegetable bundles donated.

Spirit days are another way staff and students are able to have a little fun during the school year, and those days are offered in a variety of themes. One of the most unique was entitled "Anything but a backpack day" and it brought out the creativity of students.

UCHS also hosted a Halloween pumpkin carving contest and pumpkin painting event with prizes offered to students. A Halloween paint night was also hosted, resulting in unique and personal artwork.

The sports scene has also been a busy one as volleyball has hosted a number of tournaments as well as district championships for junior girls Nov. 4 and UCHS would play host to senior girls' conference playoffs Nov. 6. Cross-country runners were part of SHSAA provincials in October.
