Wilkie Mayor issues reminder on golf cart use in town

Wilkie mayor talks of events taking place June 17 in the community's efforts to fundraise for the new swimming pool, including free public swimming.

WILKIE — With the turnover of months into June, summer is in season; and so is ball. Keeping in mind the greatest game on dirt, I would like to thank everyone who donated to Wilkie Minor Ball to ensure that players have fresh shale to play on. It is a kind thing to give so that our families may find joy. Congratulations are also in order to the alcohol survivor team at TNT Plumbing and Heating – I hope they enjoy their prize. Last but not least, I would like to thank everyone who came out and celebrated the one-year anniversary of the Wilkie Reddi Mart on Saturday, May 27. It was great to see everyone supporting our community and a local business.

As we all know, there are two seasons in this province, winter and construction. Our hard-working public works team will be finishing up the first round of back alley pick-up and moving on to pavement patching. While the team is currently short-handed, I am confident they will be able to reach the ambitious goal of 100 tonnes of asphalt being laid this year to patch and repair our roads. If you see our public works team working on the streets, please be sure to follow any signage posted and/or give them a wide berth as their safety and well-being are of utmost importance. I would also like to welcome and welcome back our new and returning public works summer students.

This is a busy town during the summer months and June is no exception. To ensure it’s not all work and no play, we at the town would like to see everyone June 17 at the parade, the concert, and any of the other events that will be going on. Some of you may have received a poster in the mail listing the whole day and what is in store. If not, please stop by the town office to pick up a copy and plan your Saturday. Wilkie Swimming Pool will be having free public swimming time that day. I would also like to welcome and welcome back new and returning life guards.

With all the fun going on this summer I would lastly like to remind everyone that golf carts and other non-standard vehicles do have rules surrounding their use on public streets. Golf carts can be driven only to and from the golf course on the most direct route between sun up and sun down, while those such as ATVs are prohibited on private or public land within the municipality.

Enjoy your time in the summer heat.
