It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kenneth Russell Cairns, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, brother, accomplished engineer, marathon runner, pickleballer, farmer, and lifelong adventurer. Ken passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, curiosity, and boundless love for his family.

Born in 1942 to Russell and Mildred Cairns, Ken grew up on the family farm in Orangeville, Manitoba where he developed a strong work ethic and a passion for all things mechanical and electrical. His early years were filled with responsibilities—driving tractors, tending to cattle, and walking (allegedly) five miles to school. After high school, he joined the Air Force, working on aircraft electrical systems, which sparked his interest in engineering. He later pursued a degree in electrical engineering at the University of Manitoba, graduating with honors in 1970.

Ken married the love of his life, Anne, in 1965, and together they built a life filled with adventure. His distinguished career at SaskPower saw him rise to Chief Engineer and lead major projects, including the construction of the Shand Power Station. Despite a demanding career, he was a dedicated father to Duane and Maija, never missing a chance to support them—whether as a swim team carpool driver at 4:30 a.m. or joining them for track practice.

A true adventurer at heart, Ken completed 12 marathons, including two Boston Marathons, and continued running into his 80s. His passion for travel took him and Anne to all seven continents and over 80 countries, where he experienced everything from exploring the icy landscapes in Antarctica, cruising the Amazon River, and ziplining through the rainforest of St Lucia. Even in retirement, he embraced new challenges, running a hobby farm with 120 head of cattle, playing endless hours of pickleball, and making unforgettable memories with his grandchildren.

Ken was a storyteller, a mentor, and a man who believed that no challenge was too big if you put your mind to it. His love for his family was unwavering, and his adventurous spirit will live on in all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Anne; his children, Duane (Evelyn) and Maija (Rastko); and his cherished grandchildren, Arron, Luka, Kiara, and Jaida; 11 brothers and sisters. He is predeceased by his parents, Russell and Mildred; brothers, Ronald and Marvin; and sister, Shirley.

Ken’s life will be celebrated in a private service with family and close friends. In his honor, we encourage you to embrace adventure, cherish your loved ones, and stay curious—just as he did every day.

Rest in peace, Ken. Your journey continues in the hearts of those who love you.
