REGINA - The man charged in connection to last week’s shooting of an RCMP officer appeared in Regina provincial court by video Wednesday.
Elijah Albert, 28, appeared before Judge Noah Evanchuk on Tuesday afternoon.
His matters have been set for 10 a.m. August 12 in Punnichy and have been adjourned to that date, with Albert again to appear by video.
Albert faces charges of attempted murder of RCMP officer with a firearm as well as discharging a firearm with intent, uttering threats and pointing a firearm. The charges stem from an early morning incident on July 24 in which Punnichy RCMP responded to a report of an armed individual at a residence on Muskowekwan First Nation.
According to RCMP, as the officers arrived on the scene, a firearm was discharged and an officer was struck. The officer was taken to hospital by ambulance with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Saskatchewan RCMP had issued a dangerous person alert in connection to the incident that day and the RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team located the suspect at a rural location near Lestock. Albert was taken into custody around 8:50 a.m. that morning.
Family members of Albert were in the courtroom for his appearance Wednesday and waved back to him on the video screen. Albert remains in custody.
