REGINA - The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency has announced a commitment to send personnel and equipment to Prince Edward Island to help the island recover from post-tropical storm Fiona.

The plan is for 15 wildland firefighters and one liaison officer to depart Prince Albert on Oct. 21, to Charlottetown.

There, they will be based for two weeks to help after Post-tropical storm Fiona impacted PEI and the Atlantic region on Sept. 24, 2022.

The SPSA firefighters are from bases across the province, and are being sent in response to a request from the P.E.I. Government.

According to SPSA, wildland firefighters are trained and experienced response crews who can assist other jurisdictions, provinces and countries during a wildfire or in response to other emergencies.

The agency also states in their news release that the firefighters are bringing chainsaws and personal protective equipment to be used to clear fallen trees from damaged structures and blocked roads.

"Following the devastation last month, the SPSA is pleased to support the province of P.E.I. with the cleanup," SPSA President Marlo Pritchard said in a statement. "The people of P.E.I. have been working tirelessly, and we are proud to help as they recover."
