SASKATCHEWAN — Parts of central Saskatchewan were hit with strong winds and large hail Wednesday night into Thursday as extreme weather moved through.
The storm caused significant damage to cars and property.
Michaela Solomon, communications consultant with SGI, confirmed nearly 500 people submitted an auto claim due to the Aug. 20 and 21 storms.
While Solomon couldn’t confirm the specific details behind the auto claims, she said most were related to hail.
Additionally, SGI Canada received 115 property claims.
“Customers have two years to file a claim. So, the claims that we see today don't necessarily paint the full picture,” she said.
SGI covers property damage caused by wind, flying debris, hail and more.
“If someone has a property policy, the damage to your home, as well as the contents or belongings that were damaged from that storm, could also be covered,” Solomon said.
As for heavy rain, she noted groundwater flooding is covered, but regular seepage in a home may not be.
Car owners with SGI are covered for any wind or hail damage that occurs in a storm.
Solomon also shared recommendations for homeowners to protect property during severe weather.
“Move objects like big garbage and recycling bins, barbecue bins, fire pits, patio furniture to a more sheltered area of your yard.”
She also recommended putting potted plants, toys and sports equipment inside during a storm.
