REGINA — As the City of Regina prepares for construction to begin for its new indoor Aquatics Facility (IAF), the city has closed down an entire road.
City council approved the closure of North Railway Street and a portion of Cameron Street between North Railway Street and 10th Avenue last week.
“The closure of the legal right-of-way is needed to accommodate site development of the future Indoor Aquatics Facility and, potentially, adjacent open space to the east,” per a report.
The report notes North Railway Street never upgraded to typical urban street standards.
The street had several private parking lots in use, but no land development.
North Railway Street connected 10th Avenue to Elphinstone Street.
As for the portion of Cameron Street, it no longer served its purpose of frontage and access to Taylor Field after the site was torn down.
The city plans to eventually extend 10th Avenue as part of the Taylor Field Redevelopment site.
“This will re-establish part of the original urban grid and accommodate multi-modal transportation between Elphinstone Street and Albert Street,” per the report.
Construction for the IAF is set to begin in early fall.
