REGINA — Regina city council will hold several special meetings over the next month.
According to a media release, there will be six special council meetings starting in September related to the 2026-2027 budget.
Back in June, council passed a motion to overhaul the budget process after councillors raised concerns about having only days to absorb and debate all the information.
The new process begins with determining if operational and capital service levels can be maintained with the funding received in 2025.
The next step is incorporating any new budget requests for 2026-2027.
Once those two steps are complete, council will review operating and capital service-level budgets, which include:
-
What services are currently being provided, and at what level.
-
Who provides the service.
-
The cost to provide that service.
-
The increase in funding needed to maintain the service at its current level in 2026-2027.
After the special council meetings, members will hear from partners, including the Regina Police Service and Regina Exhibition Association Limited, on their 2026-2027 budget requests.
Administration will then present a full document in November, including partner budgets, the capital and operating budget, and other requests.
Council will debate and make changes in December before finalizing the budget.
