REGINA — The Regina Humane Society (RHS) is introducing a new, environmentally friendly litter.

In partnership with Prairie Clean Enterprises (PCE), the RHS will implement a locally-produced, flax-straw-based cat litter called Prairie Clean Litter at their Animal Community Centre (ACC).

The RHS and PCE collaborated in 2024 for a trial study on the litter.

“The trial study demonstrated the effectiveness of the all-natural, no-additives, cat litter in odour, dust, and tracking control,” per the RHS.

Bill Thorn, RHS director of marketing and public relations, said this announcement is a step forward for animal welfare and environmental responsibility.

“Not only does this product perform well in our shelter, but it also reflects our commitment to supporting local innovation and sustainability,” he said.

All the litter will be supplied by the PCE at no cost. The RHS said this will help them focus more resources on direct care of animals while broadening their education, adoption, and outreach programs.

Those who adopt a cat or kitten from the RHS will also receive a complimentary bag of litter or a voucher to obtain one through the Prairie Clean Litter website.

“We are grateful for this partnership with RHS. They are so critical to animal welfare and adoption in Regina,” said Mark Cooper, PCE’s CEO and president.

Cooper described this partnership as a “win-win-win,” as it helps prairie farmers purchase flax straw, while helping the environment and giving consumers a choice for an eco-friendly solution.

The PCE said that up to 1 million tonnes of flax straw are burned on North American prairies each year.

Their organization plans to open a facility in Weyburn come Sept., producing cat litter, animal bedding, and flax fibre.

PCE said this will be the only flax straw mult-processing facility in the world.

Meanwhile, the RHS said the new program will roll out in October.
