REGINA – As warmer weather settles in, the Regina Police Service (RPS) is reminding residents to take proactive steps to prevent vehicle break-ins amid a recent spike in thefts.

Over the past two weeks, police have received 41 reports of thefts from vehicles, with more than 80 per cent of the cases involving unlocked doors or open windows, say RPS. In 12 instances, wallets were stolen from unattended vehicles, leaving victims vulnerable to further crimes such as fraud or identity theft.

Prevent multiple crimes with simple prevention techniques:

-Never leave valuables in a parked vehicle. If there is nothing of value in sight, there is less reason for thieves to gain entry to your vehicle.

-Remove garage door openers and spare keys to prevent thieves from gaining entry into your garage or home.

-Never leave your vehicle running with the keys inside and always lock your vehicle doors.

-Never leave your vehicle unattended with the windows rolled down.

Report suspicious activity in your neighborhood to police, by calling 306-777-6500. If you see a crime in progress, or in an emergency, keep yourself safe and call 9-1-1.
