REGINA — The Regina Police Service (RPS) is reminding residents to ensure their vehicles are protected amidst a rise in auto theft.
Data released on Wednesday mentioned there have been 53 thefts from autos reported over the last 30 days.
“It’s [been happening primarily] in the Southeast and East part of the city,” said RPS Acting Chief Lorilee Davies on Thursday.
Summer tends to see an increase in auto thefts, said Davies. So, the RPS put out a release to remind people to lock their vehicles, but also not to leave belongings inside their cars.
”People are looking for change, some quick cash, a cell phone, that type of thing [or] sunglasses, something that they can easily sell for something else.”
Davies also mentioned leaving credit cards behind is dangerous, considering people can purchase items by tapping nowadays.
Reporters asked Davies if this spike could ultimately lead to more home invasions.
“That's not something we've ever really seen in terms of a connection. We find that sort of theft from models would happen like a rash in a certain area.”
If anyone sees a suspicious person, Davies encouraged folks to contact the RPS.
“If people can just be in touch with us and let us know, then that's really our first step in being able to hold those folks accountable.”
