REGINA – A Porter Airlines flight headed to Vancouver from Hamilton had to make an emergency landing in Regina on Tuesday.
At around 8:20 p.m., the plane’s captain elected to make an emergency landing due to the smell of smoke, which wasn't visible in the cabin, said Porter Airlines in a statement on Wednesday.
The flight was diverted to Regina Airport and landed roughly 10 minutes later.
James Bogusz, Regina Airport Authority (RAA) CEO, said emergency protocols at the airport were enacted as part of the emergency landing.
“This includes our on-site fire service, who respond in what we call a standby position, simply meaning they're ready to respond in case something escalates.”
Bogusz said city partners, including Regina Fire, Regina Police Service (RPS), and EMS, were also contacted.
There were 91 people, including 85 passengers on board the flight, all of whom departed safely from the aircraft.
With Porter Airlines having no operations in Regina, Bogusz credited emergency response partners, airport staff, and more for their swift response.
All passengers stayed in hotels overnight in Regina and were expected to depart on a second Porter Airlines plane this afternoon. The original aircraft remains in Regina, and it’s unclear when or where it will go.
As for the cause of the smoke, Porter Airlines didn't confirm where it originated.
While emergency landings may seem uncommon, Bogusz said this happens more than one would expect.
”People have to remember we're a very busy airport with lots of flights, up to 50,000 movements.”
Bogusz also stressed the importance of ensuring the right protocols are in place for any future emergencies.
