REGINA - Serious crimes against the person remain an issue in Regina’s central area.
Per a police report, total assaults and robberies in the areas of North Central, Heritage, and the downtown core remained at similar levels in 2024.
In 2023, said crimes jumped from 859 to 1200 over 2022, which is a nearly 40 per cent increase.
In 2024, serious crimes only dropped by 12 reported cases to 1188.
Even with the reduced numbers, this is still higher than the average serious crimes from 2019-2021 of 1029.
Addressing these issues, the RPS established the Alternative Response Officer (ARO) last year, patrolling the streets of downtown.
This year, the RPS will establish a Downtown Safety Team (DST) consisting of the ARO and multiple BEAT officers.
The DST will operate out of the new RPS office opening inside the Cornwall Centre.
