Suspect faces multiple charges after hurling machete at officer

When Regina police searched the suspect and his backpack, they found multiple knives and a loaded firearm.

REGINA – A 22-year-old man is facing 11 charges, including assaulting a police officer with a machete, after a late-night altercation in the 13th Avenue and Osler Street area.

The incident happened just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 16. Officers on patrol noticed a man acting suspiciously. When they attempted to speak to him, the suspect dropped his backpack and fled on foot.

Officers chased the suspect on foot to an empty parking lot near Victoria Avenue where the man allegedly pulled a machete from the pocket of his pants and threw it at one of the officers.

The officer wasn’t injured. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

A search of the suspect and his backpack, after his arrest, turned up multiple knives and a loaded firearm.

The accused received minor injuries consistent with running with a machete in his pocket. He was given medical treatment.

Ethan Fiddler was charged with possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, four counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition while prohibited, assault of a police officer with a weapon, possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized, possession of a loaded/restricted firearm, and failing to comply with conditions of a release order.

Fiddler appeared in Regina Provincial Court on Aug. 18.
