SASKATOON — Aden Bowman Collegiate Grade 12 student Abhinav Menon is one of the recipients of this year’s Schulich Leader Scholarship, a $100,000 grant to support Canada’s top Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics prospects.

Menon was selected for his outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements, as he joins 49 other students in the country who excel in STEM-related subjects in receiving $100,000 in scholarships. He will major in chemistry at the University of British Columbia.

Schulich Leader Scholarships awards 100 students with grants, with 50 for engineering at $120,000 each and another 50 for STEM fields at $100,000 each.

Menon said he received the offer while attending his class at Aden Bowman, adding that he first shared the news with his teachers and counsellors, who had supported his studies.

“This scholarship has given me financial security and enables me to focus on my studies without financial stress. As well, the Schulich community has leaders whom I can be inspired by and collaborate with,” said Menon.

Program founder Seymour Schulich said the money helps Canada’s top universities attract and retain exceptional STEM talent in the country, empowering them to become innovators and entrepreneurs that the nation needs.

“When these scholars go on to drive prosperity and strengthen our economy, Canada must ensure the right economic conditions exist so they can build their promising futures here. Supporting their entrepreneurial ambition is essential for turning Canadian ingenuity into lasting national success,” said Schulich.

Recognizing the increasing importance and impact that STEM disciplines will have on the prosperity of future generations, businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich established this $100+ million scholarship fund in 2012 to encourage Canada’s best and brightest students to become Schulich Leader Scholars: the next generation of entrepreneurial-minded, technology innovators.

Through the Schulich Foundation, these prestigious entrance scholarships are awarded to 100 high school graduates enrolling in a STEM undergraduate program at 20 partner universities in Canada. Every high school in Canada can submit one Schulich Leader Nominee per academic year based on academic excellence in STEM, entrepreneurial leadership and financial need.
