SASKATOON — Saskatoon Fire Department crews successfully contained a fast-moving grass fire that occurred along Circle Drive West on Monday. A southbound CN train caused the fire, which was reported at 6:19 p.m.
The fire was ignited adjacent to the train tracks, in an area between 33rd Street West and 22nd Street West, moving dangerously close to the barrier that separates the tracks from nearby residential areas.
The first arriving fire crews were greeted by a large, active fire, intensified by dry brush and strong winds, and began to aggressively attack the flames to stop the fire from spreading toward structures behind the sound barrier.
Recognizing that the fire posed a threat to nearby residential structures, the incident commander called dispatch to send additional resources to contain the flames before they could spread beyond the barrier.
Firefighters used multiple hose lines to rapidly apply water to the fire burning along the train tracks, and brush trucks drove along the ditch to extinguish telecommunication poles and trees. A total of eight fire apparatus were deployed to help with the containment and extinguishment.
The firefighters also protected the telecommunication poles to prevent service disruptions and the trees to help minimize the damaged area of the brush fire. The fire was quickly brought under control and fully extinguished shortly after.
The SFD reported that no firefighters or civilians were injured, and evacuation was unnecessary. The department confirmed on Tuesday morning that the area is clear of fire and no ongoing risk remains.
SFD officials have not yet confirmed whether the CN train was directly responsible for igniting the fire, though preliminary reports suggest sparks from the train may have caused the blaze. Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the incident.
This incident underscores the risks associated with dry conditions and railway corridors during the summer months. Residents are reminded to report any signs of fire activity immediately by calling 911.
