Inquest finds Saskatoon man died of suicide by multiple gunshots

A public inquest has found that Ronald Herman, 36, died of suicide by multiple gunshots in Saskatoon on Oct. 27, 2022, after an altercation with police.

SASKATOON — A public inquest into the death of Ronald Herman determined that Herman died of suicide from multiple gunshots on Oct. 27, 2022, in Saskatoon. The jury did not make any recommendations in the case.

The inquest was held July 21 to 25, at the Court of King’s Bench in Saskatoon.

According to a Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice release, Herman, 36, was observed at a residence in Saskatoon in possession of a firearm on Oct. 27, 2022. Saskatoon Police Service members attended the residence, and Herman was shot after an altercation with police. He was transported by ambulance to Royal University Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died, and the medical cause and manner of death. A coroner’s jury may also make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.

Coroner Timothy Hawryluk, K.C., presided over the inquest.

The six-person jury inquired into Herman’s death and determined that he died of suicide from multiple gunshot wounds.
