SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre, with just two days left for this month, is looking for the public’s support to reach its goal for the Fresh Fruit for Kids campaign. Canpotex was the food bank’s campaign partner, donating an initial $50,000.

Thousands of Saskatoon children lose their daily food support, something the public school provides to students during the school year. The nutrition program, in partnership with various charitable foundations, includes breakfast, lunch and snacks.

Around 41 per cent of Saskatoon kids access the food bank’s emergency hamper program, and every dollar donated and raised gives more children in the city access to nutritious food, like fruits, to help keep them healthy.

On Tuesday, the Government of Saskatchewan announced a $2 million commitment in the next two years, with $1 million to be distributed next month to more than 30 food banks and other agencies across the province. The government first announced the funding in July 2024.

Social Services Minister Terry Jenson said his ministry will coordinate with Food Banks of Saskatchewan in distributing the money that would help families and food banks in the province keep up with the rising cost of basic food items.

"By partnering with Food Banks of Saskatchewan once again this year, we are providing additional support to communities across our province,” said Jenson, who added the money would be based on population and average food bank usage of the communities they serve.

Aside from the funding the Saskatoon Food Bank will be receiving from the government and the $50,000 from Canpotex, they are still accepting monetary donations, which can be done online or in person, cash or cheque, at 202 Avenue C South.

Canpotex is one of the world’s largest suppliers of potash overseas. On behalf of its shareholders, Mosaic and Nutrien, Canpotex delivers Saskatchewan potash, a valuable fertilizer nutrient, to customers, helping the world’s farmers grow more food.
