SASKATOON — A retro Saskatchewan Roughriders flag was raised at Civic Square on Friday, as part of the city’s celebration of Green and White Day, to show support for the province’s football team ahead of its upcoming match against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Riders face the Blue Bombers on Sunday, in the 60th Labour Day Classic, hoping to end a three-game skid against their long-time rivals. The Riders have lost three of their last five meetings, including a 38-22 loss in last year’s West Division final.

The last time Saskatchewan defeated Winnipeg was on July 19, 2024, by a score of 19-9. The Riders last won the division finals in 2013 by beating the Calgary Stampeders on their way to claiming their fourth Grey Cup.

The flag raised at Civic Square was used by the team from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. The Riders also unveiled an Indigenous-inspired logo last year, designed by Chris Chipak from the Red Pheasant Cree Nation.

Some City Hall employees and Saskatoon residents wore the Riders’ Green and White Friday morning, answering Mayor Cynthia Block’s invitation to don the team’s colours to show their support.

“It is a chance to remind ourselves and the rest of the province that the Riders belong to us, too. We’re going to be out there showing our Rider pride, especially as we prepare to host a pre-season game in Saskatoon in May 2026,” said Block in a video posted on social media.
