Saskatoon Fire Department hosts slip and slide at John Lake

Kids and families flocked to John Lake Park Aug. 19 for Saskatoon Fire Department’s first public slip and slide event of 2025.

SASKATOON  — Kids of all ages were sliding into happiness and opportunity to cool off on Aug. 19 as Saskatoon Fire Department held their first public slip and slide event of 2025. John Lake Park served as the perfect location with plenty of places to sit with either sun or shade, as well as a good hill to set the slides up on.

No one seemed to mind the long lineups waiting for a chance to slip and slide at John Lake Park, thanks to the free, fun, family event hosted by Saskatoon Fire Department. Sherri Solomko

“Events such as this are dependent on a combination of factors, including weather. With the inconsistent weather this summer, the fire department has not been able to plan any slip and slides until today. Last year was the first year since 2019 that we have done the slip and slide event, and we are happy to be able to bring them back to the community," said Riely Knock, director of community relations for the Saskatoon Fire Department.

This free, fun, family event is part of community engagement that the SFD chooses to be part of. The SFD did help host a similar event for Elmwood residents on Aug. 1.

Knock adds, “There are a limited number of hills at public parks in Saskatoon that are suitable for a giant slip and slide. John Lake Park has a great hill for this event. Since we are counting down the final days of summer break, rather than explore new locations, SFD opted to go with one that we are familiar with and fits within our needs. “

Long lineups kept fire fighters busy but it was clearly evident when in the work zone with members that they were enjoying the experience as much as the participants were.

Saskatoon fire cadets, Jace, Shane and Evan say they were in the cadet program during school, as well as serving this summer with SFD. They were part of the team of city firefighters who kept the water flowing and the smiles happening.
