SASKATOON — Saskatoon police have dealt with at least three firearms incident since last evening.
Shortly after 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, police say they were conducting an ongoing investigation in which they were arresting three people; one of them, observed to have a firearm, fled into a field near Lowe Road and McOrmond Drive.
The suspect was taken into custody a short time later following the deployment of a police service dog, and was treated for injuries described by police as consistent with a dog bite. Officers later confirmed the firearm to be an imitation.
The previous night, shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 13, police were called to an establishment in the 1300 block of 8th Street East for a report of a man in possession of a firearm. There, police say, they were told a suspect had shown a firearm to the establishment’s security guard during a confrontation, then fled the area. The suspect was located a short time later and arrested. Police say he was found to be in possession of an imitation firearm and fentanyl.
As a result, the 26-year-old Saskatoon man was charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, assault with a weapon, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.
In another incident, police are investigating following a report of a firearm being discharged earlier that night.
At around 7:45 p.m. on Aug. 13, police were called to the 2100 block of 20th Street West following a report of a firearm being discharged, with the suspect having fled the area. Police say officers located several spent casings and observed damage to a nearby camper. No injuries were reported as a result of the gunfire.
Members of the Guns and Gangs Unit and Patrol are investigating.
