SASKATOON – The city’s Crime Severity Index (CSI) has seen a notable decline in 2024, marking a positive shift after several years of increases.
According to latest data from Statistics Canada, Saskatoon’s overall CSI dropped to 117.49 in 2024, down from 131.07 in 2023, a 10.36 per cent decrease. This follows a steady rise in previous years, with the index at 120.79 in 2020, 121.22 in 2021, and 129.55 in 2022.
Provincially, Saskatchewan also saw a reduction in crime severity, with the CSI falling from 162.17 in 2023 to 153.85 in 2024, a 5.13 per cent drop.
While overall crime has decreased, violent crime in the city continues an upward trend. The violent CSI rose to 159.83 in 2024, up from 157.14 in 2023, a 1.71 per cent increase. This follows a steady climb over recent years, with the index at 140.74 in 2020.
In contrast, Saskatchewan’s violent crime severity saw a slight improvement, decreasing from 205.40 in 2023 to 198.53 in 2024.
The non-violent CSI in Saskatoon saw a significant drop, falling 16.58 per cent from 121.76 in 2 023 to 101.57 in 2024. This follows fluctuations in previous years, with figures at 113.33 (2020), 113.90 (2021), and 121.83 (2022).
Provincially, non-violent crime severity also decreased, moving from 146.27 in 2023 to 137.29 in 2024.
