SASKATOON — Officers from the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) and other provincial agencies issued hundreds of tickets and removed several unsafe vehicles from the roads during this year’s Saskatchewan Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).

The two-day initiative took place on May 20 and 21 with officers stationed at various locations throughout Saskatoon. The enforcement focused on a range of road safety measures, including vehicle equipment checks, car seat inspections, commercial vehicle compliance and general traffic violations.

Over the course of the campaign, four vehicles were seized after drivers were found to be under the influence of cocaine or cannabis. Out of 44 commercial vehicles inspected, 16 required additional assessment and 15 were deemed unfit for the road and placed out of service.

Distracted driving was a major concern, with 98 drivers ticketed—most for using a cellphone behind the wheel. One driver was clocked at 111 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Attridge Drive, while another was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

In total, 345 tickets were issued and 114 warnings handed out over the two days.
