Carlyle Cougars move onto the semifinals in the Big Six playoffs

SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN - The Carlyle Cougars have moved into the semifinal round of the Big Six Hockey League's playoffs.

The second-seeded Cougars knocked off the No. 7 Wawota Flyers 8-5 Wednesday night in Carlyle to sweep the best-of-five series in three games.

Ben Johnstone had three goals and an assist for Carlyle in Game 3. Marc Shaw scored twice, and Brett Turgeon, Valdez Bear and Adrien Riddell also scored. Talen King was the Cougars' goalie.

Wyatt Fisk scored twice for Wawota, and Ayden Lawless, Brady Dinwoodie and Billy Easton had the Flyers' other goals. Kye Steinke was Wawota's goalie.

The Cougars join the top-ranked Redvers Rockets in the semifinal round. Redvers, who won the league last year, swept the eighth-seeded Midale Mustangs in the first round.

Earlier this week, the Carnduff Red Devils defeated the Bienfait Coalers 5-2 on Tuesday night in Carnduff to take a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five showdown.

Devon Carriere scored twice for Carnduff. Mark Moriarty, Trey Stocker and Tanner Reynolds also scored.

Taysen Holt had both goals for Bienfait.

Cody Dumaine was in goal for the Red Devils, while Jackson Walliser was the Bienfait goalie.

Carnduff will look to finish off the series Friday night in Bienfait. Game time is at 8 p.m. Game 5, if necessary, would be Monday night in Carnduff, also at 8 p.m.

The third-seeded Moosomin Rangers have a 2-0 lead over the No. 6 Oxbow Huskies in their battle. Game 3 is set for Friday night at 8 p.m., Game 4, if necessary, would be Sunday in Oxbow at 7 p.m., and Game 5, if necessary, would be Monday night in Moosomin at 8:45 p.m.
