Saskatchewan author Garrett Wilson held a fascinating reading from his new book “Outlier, Life, Law and Politics in the West” at the Shurniak Art Gallery in Assiniboia on April 23.
Wilson is a native of Limerick, and went on to become a well-known lawyer in Regina. His work has given him a bird’s eye view of some of the most newsworthy moments in Saskatchewan’s history. He shared some snippets from his new book with the Assiniboia audience.
Wilson is a natural storyteller. He captivated the audience in a straightforward style weaving together details from his background knowledge of the province’s political history. He also recounted some of the colourful backgrounds of the biggest political figures from Assiniboia and area. Wilson covered topics like the era of Liberal leader Ross Thatcher, former MLA Hazen Argue, and the anarchy and uncertainties surrounding the Regina police strike. He also revealed new details about the Colin Thatcher murder case that involved a Willow Bunch local Mo Laberge.
Wilson began writing as editor of the University of Saskatchewan student newspaper as he studied for his law degree in the 1950s. He rose to prominence as an author with his novel “Deny, Deny, Deny” about the murder trial of former MLA and Cabinet Minister Colin Thatcher. He’s the winner of three national writing awards.
