Centennial celebration of Weyburn Public Library on June 18

A centennial barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with hot dogs and hamburgers available along with face-painting, music and games for all ages.

The Weyburn Public Library will host a centennial celebration.

WEYBURN - Many activities and events are planned for the Weyburn Public Library in June, with the library’s centennial celebration featured on Saturday, June 18. A centennial barbecue will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with hot dogs and hamburgers available along with face-painting, music and games for all ages.

Donations will be accepted in support of the library at the event.

The library will also make centennial book draws, and patrons can get a ballot to enter by using the services at the library, such as taking out a book, using a computer or picking up a grab-and-go package from the front desk.

The library along with the Weyburn Arts Council are holding Pride Week events all of this week. They began with making pride buttons on Monday and had a rainbow paint night on Tuesday.

There will be a session to make clay rainbow ornaments tonight, June 8, at the Credit Union Spark Centre, at 6:30 p.m., and you can make rainbow friendship bracelets on Thursday, June 9, at the Weyburn Art Gallery at 6:30 p.m.

Felt broaches will be the craft on Friday, June 10 at the Weyburn Art Gallery, at 6:30 p.m., and a matinee on Saturday, June 11, will feature the movie, The Birdcage, at 2:30 p.m. This movie may not be appropriate for children.

The Baby and Me program will be held on Tuesdays, on June 14 and 28, and on Mondays, July 4 and Aug. 8, all at 10 a.m.

A program for preschoolers, a time for stories, stretches and movements, will be held on Friday, June 10 at 10 a.m., featuring the Octopus Escapes.

A storytime at the Young Fellows spray park will be held on Thursday, July 7 and Aug. 11, and at Nickle Lake on July 21 and Aug. 25, all at 2 p.m.

A Makerspace Mania session for children aged eight to 12 will feature fort-making on Monday, June 13 at 4 p.m.

A Think Tank session will be held on Thursday, June 30 at 4 p.m. to “grow a rainbow”, by taking paper towels, markers and water to create rainbows.

Registration for the TD Summer Reading Club will open on June 16, for the programs and reading challenges that will start the week of June 27 and go through July and August.

A family program will feature magician Danny Kazam on Wednesday, July 20 at 11 a.m., who will have magic and puppets at his show.

Programs for tweens (ages nine to 12) will include a book club on Thursday, June 23 at 4 p.m., reading the book “Matilda” by Roald Dahl, and a tween chef session on Tuesday, June 21 at 4 p.m. They will be making cheesy pepperoni sticks and Caesar salad.

A Tween crafting session will be held on Tuesday, June 14 at 4 p.m., making tie-dye crafts.

For teens (ages 13-17), there is a craft time on Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m., when they will make zen gardens.

Dungeons and Dragons is played every second Thursday from 4-6 p.m., with the next session on June 16. Gamers Guild will meet on Friday, June 10 at 4 p.m.

The teen summer reading challenge, Myths to Slay Bingo, will run from July 2 to Aug. 20. Teens can pick up a bingo card at the library and read a book or graphic novel, listen to an audiobook or an e-book about a myth or legend. You can also listen to podcasts, watch a movie, play a video game or come to a teen program at the library.

The windup for this program will be on Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. The cards are available at the library starting on June 27.

Adults will also have a summer reading bingo during July and August, and the first 50 people who pick up a card at the library will get a small prize.

The deadline to get entries in for prizes is Aug. 19, and the windup will be on Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6:30 p.m.

The adult book club will run through the summer. For June, the book is “June”, a novel by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore, and the book club will meet on Monday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m.

The book for July is “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress” by Dai Sijie, with the club meeting on Monday, July 18. For August, the book is “The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold. The club will meet on Monday, Aug. 15.

An adult class in basic watercolour painting will be held on Monday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. An adult game night is set for Tuesday, June 21 at 6:30 p.m.
