The Weyburn Salvation Army Food Bank desperately needs donations to fill their near empty shelves.
The food banks in both Weyburn and Estevan are experiencing difficulty keeping the shelves stocked. Local layoffs because of the down turn in oil prices has seen a near 40 percent increase in use of the food bank in Weyburn and an increase over 80 percent in Estevan. In Weyburn alone, approximately 300 people benefit from the use of the local food bank and in order to keep up with the ever increasing demand, basic food supplies are needed. The food banks accepts all non -perishable food items including Kraft dinner, cereal, sidekicks, pasta, rice, peanut butter, juice, children snacks, granola bars, canned fruit/vegetables and beans, are some of the examples. The Food bank will also accept meat that has been processed and packaged at a certified butcher.
Residents can also donate cash or Co-op gift Cards which aid in the purchase of dairy and produce products. Anyone who is interested in donating has several options available to them. Donations can be dropped off at The Salvation Army , Monday through Friday (between 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) or the Thrift Store, Monday through Saturday (between 10:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.) CIBC Weyburn will be aiding in filling of the shelves by hosting a food drive May 26-28.
