The Red Coat Ag Society held its biggest community market yet at the Assiniboia Civic Centre on August 27. This was the sixth year for the market which ran from noon to 3 p.m. The farmer’s market attracted a high level of community support with a steady stream of visitors for shopping, lunch and socializing.
Over 24 tables ringed the arena with vendors offering a variety of homemade and home-grown items, and some tables even sold out. The produce on offer included honey, garlic, fresh produce, fresh baking, sewing, crafts, wooden furniture, yummy Syrian cuisine, knitting and crocheting, blankets, bracelets, halters, hula-hoops, tea, yogurt, apple goods, horse halters and cosmetic items. Some vendors came from the local area such as Assiniboia, Rockglen, Mossbank, Kincaid, Bengough, Limerick and Gravelbourg as well as Moose Jaw and Regina.
The Assiniboia multiple 4-H club was available to serve a hamburger and smokie lunch throughout the afternoon. The club sold out and made a profit of just under $200.
The market is organized by a community market committee of the Red Coat Ag Society. It will already be planning for the 2018 community market soon with hopes for expanding it. Recently, the committee switched to holding the market on Sunday which has improved attendance of vendors and visitors alike. The group also has hosted other events, such as a seminar for farmers and it has partnered with FarmSask for Agricultural Day in schools.
