UC Chimes: Who should control your life?

Almost every day unexpected events happened around the world which make innocent people victims.

Almost every day unexpected events happened around the world which make innocent people victims. Last week there were the bombing in Boston, a fertilizer factory explosion in Texas, and the earthquake in China, which killed and injured many innocent people and damaged a lot of property. These are only the well known incidents. We don't know how many other small and large tragic events happened in the world and how many innocent people have become victims. They have become the victims of these simply because they were in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and subjected to a wrong incident.

The bombing in Boston is definitely an act of terrorism. The terrorists involved were brainwashed, trained, and planned to kill innocent people without any rationale or discretion. This kind of terrorism is the most savage, uncivilized, cowardly and insane human act. Our society should not allow these barbarians to control any human life anymore. The other incident appears to be due to human negligence. It is obviously a preventable accident. Ironically the more scientific knowledge and technology are developed, the more these kinds of human errors and mistakes occur. Sometimes human negligence and errors impact people's life who have nothing to do with it.

Still the number one cause of death and property damage are natural disasters. People can not do much about the causes of natural disasters. But we can find more and better ways to respond to them in order to minimize the victims and property damage. Besides these, there are many other things that can control human life such as disease, stress, anger, fear, destructive behaviour, bad attitude, wrong ideology, toxic and poisonous relationships, blue winter, suicidal depression and so forth. Although human power and achievements seem to be enormous, but each individual's life seems to be so vulnerable and fragile that it can be easily controlled by outside factors.

So it is a serious question, "Who should control your life? The more precise question, "Whom do you let control your life?" Regardless of you are a Christian, everyone and anyone may want the one who has created human life, to be the one to control their life. If it is true that nobody is able to control their own life, then why don't you let God who is the Creator of all things do it? Even in such an unexpected and unimaginable of dying situation, an individual has the choice to commend one's life to God, as did Jesus Christ at the last moment on the cross. Jesus said, "Father, into your hands, I command my spirit" (Luke 23:46). If you believe that God is always with you on your life journey and let God control your life, and then your life will be much better, deeper and richer than anything else does for you.
