What will you be?

"My background is in design, decorating and photography, among other creative skills. Even as a child I didn't know what kind of an artist I would be but I knew I would be an artist.

That quote from a Toastmaster member I recently interviewed got me musing: did I always think I would be a writer? Do I still have other dreams brooding somewhere in my heart? If I could start the process all over, what do I think I should be?

Today, Easter Sunday afternoon, I think I should have been a farmer. The sun is shining and I spent a couple of hours weeding and fertilizing the rhubarb patch and one of the main flower beds. I love playing in the dirt but, I reasoned with myself, you can't drive those big tractors and combines let alone afford to buy them. I guess that noble aspiration is defunct; I'd better stick to cultivating rhubarb, potatoes and azaleas.

A couple of days ago I did a lot of baking in order to use up surplus berries from last year's garden. The aroma, let alone the satisfaction of knowing there are desserts for our upcoming visitors made me realize that I could become a cook, albeit one with a large kitchen garden of herbs, fruit and vegetables. That would be a compromise, a kind of combination of two appealing careers.

I do know the medical profession would never be for me, I'm too much of a bleeding heart but with no stomach for blood outside a human being's veins.

As for the honourable profession of accounting or even bookkeeping, there's no way. Adding and subtracting I can do, beyond that I call my accountant.

In all honesty I know that I am doing what God has called me to do. I hope you are, too!
