Adam Swanson of Carlyle recently competed in the Saskatchewan Amateur Bodybuilding Association competition on Saturday, April 7, held in Regina at the Conexus Arts Centre. Swanson's hard work and dedication to the sport paid off. At this provincial championship final he was able to take first place in the Junior Men's Category (21 years and under) and third place in the Men's Welterweight Category.

He has worked hard this past year. Swanson made his first debut at a Novice Bodybuilding Competition in Saskatoon, April 30, 2011. There he had placed fourth in the Junior Men's Category and sixth in the Men's Welterweight Category, thus improving on both standings this year.

For this competition judges are looking at, "overall proportion and conditioning," ultimately for someone who has a "well rounded physique," stated Swanson. He expressed that "some people will go into the competition with good muscle definition in the upper body, but may have neglected to work on the lower body."

The most important thing for newcomers to the sport and even to those who are looking to begin exercising in general, Swanson says, would be to "stay consistent and do it smart. Try to have a goal set and work towards it." This attitude and dedication to training helped him achieve his success. In preparation for competition he is aided by trainers from Estevan.

After winning this provincial championship he is eligible to compete in the national competition. Swanson, however, has chosen not to compete in nationals this year stating:

"I think I will take the rest of the year off and 2013, well not off, but from competitions to focus on training, to gain mass. Then I'll hit the 2014 nationals."
