Centennial mural, programs for all ages at Weyburn Library

WEYBURN - Activities ranging from book club, cooking classes to helping paint a centennial mural are featured at the Weyburn Public Library in September.

There will be three sessions held for painting a centennial mural, on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m., and Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m., plus one more on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 10 a.m.

For children, there are programs like gaming, junior chef and STEM (science and technology) think-tank and crafts.

Children aged six to eight can come in and make nature wands on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 4 p.m. Making elephant toothpaste will be the activity for the STEM Think Tank on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and on Sept. 20, there will be STEM Makerspace kits available to use.

Junior chef will be held on Monday, Sept. 12, when children aged six to eight can learn about making a mini-lasagna with Greek salad. Adventure gaming for those aged seven to 12 will held on Wednesdays, Sept. 7 and 21, at 4 p.m.

For tweens (ages nine to 12), there is a Tween book club on Sept. 15, where readers can discuss the classic, “Charlotte’s Web”.

Tween chef is set for Sept. 26, where participants can learn how to make a chicken stir fry with steamed rice, and for crafts, there is a class to make fall scented candles on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Teens (ages 13-17) have a variety of programs to take part in, including a cooking class on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 2 p.m., making cheeseburger cups.

Dungeons and Dragons is held every second Thursday from 4-6:30 p.m., on Sept. 15 and 29. A club for fans of anime and manga will be held on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.

For readers, there will be a “Banned Book Club” on Wednesday, Sept. 21, which will let readers decide about whether a book should be banned or not. The book for September is “Maus” by Art Spiegelman.

There is also a League of Graphic Book Lovers for 11-14 year-olds, and on Sept. 12, they will discuss Estranged by Ethan M. Aldridge.

For adults, there will be two author readings this fall. Shannan Mondor will read from her debut book, “How in the Hell Did I Get Here?”, a story about overcoming alcoholism and mental illness, on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m.

Weyburn’s own Anne Lazurko will be at the library to read from her latest novel, “What is Written on the Tongue”, on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

For those who love reading, there are two book clubs. The first club will discuss the month’s selection, “Nothing Daunted” by Dorothy WIckenden, on Monday, Sept. 19.

There is also the Any Book Club, where readers can come discuss any book they happen to be reading, on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

There will be a class on watercolour washes on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10:30 a.m., where participants can learn about watercolour wash techniques.

An adult cooking club will be held on Monday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m., where Jennie Rudachyk will teach participants how to make a flaky pie crust.

A class in Acadian history will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m., with presenter Steven Wilson.

For gaming enthusiasts, there will be Discord game nights, using the Discord server through the Southeast Regional Library. A tour of the server will be posted on YouTube on Sept. 1, and a trivia game night will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14.
