Members of Weyburn's Chamber of Commerce will continue to see involvement including lobbying to all three levels of government as well as organizing several events throughout the year, according to the Chamber's strategic plan, released at their breakfast meeting held Wednesday morning at the Travelodge.
The 2013 strategic plan was created from the Chamber's four strategic committees, including the executive committee, membership and expansion committee, government issues and education committee, and the WEYBEX committee.
Among the responsibilities of the executive committee is planning for succession as executive terms expire, and planning and organizing the President's Dinner and annual meeting, which is coming up this year on Tuesday, March 26.
In relation to the dinner, manager Jeff Richards announced the guest speaker will be Jim Hopson, the president and CEO of the Saskatchewan Roughriders football club. The dinner also includes the Chamber's annual meeting, and the awarding of the Golden Spike Award, for significant contributions to the community.
This committee also ensures that the Chamber is represented to the Saskatchewan and Canadian Chambers of Commerce, and is on such community organizations as the Weyburn Oil Show, SEREDA, the Weyburn Housing Advisory Committee, Doctor Recruitment Task Force, Regional Planning Commission, and the Highway 39 Corridor Development.
The Chamber will have a summer student starting in May, and through the Membership and Expansion committee, she will be doing a survey of members to ensure their interests are being represented at the Chamber.
Through the government issues and education committee, they ensure there are regular meetings each year with MP Ed Komarnicki, twice a year with MLA Dustin Duncan, and with City of Weyburn officials (at least five times a year), and issues are raised at each level that have come up as important to Chamber members.
The WEYBEX committee organizes the business awards which are currently awarded every second year, with event planning to start in the fourth quarter of the year before the next awards, which in this case will be 2014. Richards indicated the Chamber's wish, long-term to help these awards become an annual event.
Some of the annual events the Chamber organizes and runs include the summer parade (with the Fair) and the December Parade of Lights; the Golden Sheaf Award (to a producer) and the Golden Spike Award (to a volunteer or volunteers); and all-candidates forums for elections at the local, provincial and federal levels.
