Gordon F. Kells High School Cougar Corner

A New Year has started and the staff and students of G.F. Kells are looking forward to a great 2011. Now that January is here, it means grade 10-12 final exams aren't far away. Students will be writing finals during the week of January 24th.

A New Year has started and the staff and students of G.F. Kells are looking forward to a great 2011. Now that January is here, it means grade 10-12 final exams aren't far away. Students will be writing finals during the week of January 24th. Grade 7-9 students will not be writing finals and will have regular classes that week. The new semester starts January 31.

Curling continues on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5:00. Some curlers are coming one day and others are coming both days. There is a fee of $20 for the curling club. Curlers should turn in their fees to Mrs. Beaver.

After a very successful season last year, the GF Kells Drama Club has started meeting to select a play for the upcoming season.

We at GFK would like to remind the public that when you are uncomfortable with something you see or hear about our school, we ask you to do the following:

Call the school, but don't do so anonymously. Identify yourself so that reasonable and trusting two-way communication may be conducted.

Speak only of your concerns. If "all" your neighbors share your concern, the schoolhouse door is open for them to meet with the principal or teacher on their own.

Go first to the source of your concern. Don't "jump over the head" of the teacher to contact the principal if it is a classroom issue. Similarly, if the issue is school-related, your first contact should be the principal (or vice-principal).

Use our School Community Council, regularly scheduled principal/parent meetings, parent-teacher conferences, etc.. These provide avenues for communication between parents, community members, and our school.

Read the information sent home from our school. Read the school's blog. Encourage and expect your middle/junior high/high school student to bring home school communications. Post our newsletter on the fridge.

Read "Cougar Corner", where information may have been reported.

We want open communication and you can always contact us. The shortest distance between us and the public is the distance between you and the phone. You want to know, you have the right to know, and you should know. So please ask.

Please remember:

Don't let a rumor or a concern "simmer and stew" inside of you for weeks or months. Immediately defuse your discomfort by meeting with the appropriate school personnel.

The myth of "If I make 'waves' my child will suffer" is simply not true.

The vast majority of rumors are born out of misunderstandings. Rely on school personnel for clarification of any issues that concern you.

Along with the school, the Student Council is fundraising in order to purchase two virtual information signs. We are looking for sponsorship with the potential for advertising on these high tech signs. Anyone interested should contact Mr. Howe at the school.
