Gordon F. Kells High School Cougar Corner

It's hard to believe that we've already been in school for 2 months. It must be because the students have been so busy. Last week the rookie boys played two teams. They hosted Arcola on Wednesday.

Last week the rookie boys played two teams. They hosted Arcola on Wednesday. This was their first game of the season and we had some close games, winning one of them. On Thursday, the boys went to Oxbow and showed great improvement from Tuesday. They played an excellent first game, which they won and then struggled a bit against some strong Oxbow play in the next three games. Overall, a good start to the season.

The intermediate boys' volleyball team has a game next Wednesday versus Manor.

On Friday, October 15, author Marie Donais Calder visited the grade 10 class. She shared her experiences as an author, read from one of her books, and discussed her father's post WWII experiences in Germany, which are the topic of her book series. It was wonderful that Mrs. Calder was able to meet with the students. We hope we can get her to come back to meet with other grades in the spring.

On Saturday, October 16, three members of the G.F. Kells Cross Country Team competed at the provincial meet in Regina. It was a great day for a race and the students did very well. In a midget girls' race with more than 90 competitors from around the province, Renae Fafard finished 32nd and Kacey Valentine finished 38th. In the senior girls' race, Jackie VanDresar finished 89th. Way to go girls!

The SADD group would also like to thank Mr. Tracey VanDresar for his role in the mock accident on Friday, Oct. 8. Without his help, we would not have had a crashed vehicle to provide the setting for the accident. Thank you for bringing and removing the vehicle. Sorry for the omission Tracey; your participation was integral.

There will be a school dance on Friday, October 22. Doors open at 8:00 pm and close at 9:00 pm. The dance goes until 12:00 am.

Thank you to all of the parents who came out to our school community council meeting last Thursday. The new report card system was reviewed along with the school's assessment policy. Elections were also held and we will report on this in next week's Cougar Corner. The school newsletter has been mailed to all parents. If you do not have one, come on over to the school and pick one up.

Picture re-takes will be happening on October 27.

Along with the school, the Student Council is fundraising in order to purchase two virtual information signs. We are looking for sponsorship with the potential for advertising on these high tech signs. Anyone interested should contact Mr. Howe at the school.
