Heavy rain causes flash flood in city

It was "deja-vu all over again" for many Weyburn residents on Friday, as a large dump of rain in a short time caused flash flooding in a couple areas of the city, and almost caused a second boil-water advisory to be placed.

The rain, which measured almost three inches in about 15 or 20 minutes, caused a deluge of water to gather on Railway Avenue, but also on streets in the city's northeast area, including some of the streets where the city's newest homes are being built.

Mayor Debra Button said the rain fell so hard and so fast, "the storm sewers were completely overwhelmed," causing flooding on some streets, along with some reports of water coming up in basements.

It took a few hours for the waters to subside on Railway, which was deep enough for some vehicles to be caught and stalled, but the mayor noted the water would take a little longer to be gone from 18th Street and Douglas Road, and other streets in that area, like Clarke Avenue, which were overwhelmed with water.

The city staff kept a close eye on how well the lift station was handling the water as they prepared for the worst, remembering the experiences of the weekend of June 17 when heavy rains led to major flooding in and around the city.
