Larry Heggs, a longtime resident and former Chamber of Commerce manager, has thrown his hat into the race for the vacancy on city council.

WEYBURN – Long-time resident and community leader Larry Heggs will seek the opportunity to represent the City of Weyburn residents in the upcoming byelection.

“The sudden and unfortunate resignation of Councillor Dick Michel leaves Weyburn with big shoes to fill. Coun. Michel was truly a dedicated public official that cared deeply during his nearly quarter century of service. Although he will be hard to replace, I feel I am up to the task, and look forward to the challenge,” said Heggs.

Asked if he had any concerns or issues he would like to address on council, he said, “Currently, I would say I am interested in helping the city and the citizens achieve what is needed to continue to build and grow this community.”

Heggs said his passion for Weyburn is second to none, noting his community involvement included the Weyburn Credit Union Board, Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show, the Family Place Board, and numerous committees and organizations.

“My almost two decades of service to the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce has helped me prepare for City Council. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with all levels of Government and business organizations from around the province.”

In addition, Heggs has served time as a board member and executive director of the Weyburn and District Planning Commission, collaborating with the City and the RM of Weyburn in order to work together for common objectives. He has been a board member and executive director of the Weyburn Economic Development committee.

“Working with community-based organizations has given me insight into the opportunities and challenges a community like Weyburn sees in growth and business development,” commented Heggs.

“I bring a hardworking, common sense approach to everything I do, and I would certainly continue this approach while representing the great people of Weyburn. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have raised my family in this wonderful community that I am so tremendously proud to call home. I ask the residents of Weyburn for their support and I pledge to represent them with accountability and accessibility. I truly believe it is not a few people in the council or administration that make Weyburn a great community. I believe it is Weyburn’s people who make Weyburn what it is.”
