The Royal Canadian Legion branch in Assiniboia held its annual Valentine’s Strawberry Tea on February 11 at the 55 Club building in Assiniboia. There were approximately 75 people attending the event, which included food, music and a door prize draw. Patrons were entertained by the Ole Tyme Fiddlers of Assiniboia, who played a variety of popular fiddle music tunes. The door prize was won by Lena Jonescu, member and one of the founders of the Ole Tyme Fiddlers. The Strawberry Tea is one of the fundraising activities of the Assiniboia Legion. The branch has about 50 members and its president is Rita Walters. The Legion also has a Poppy Fund campaign and the funds are used to assist veterans in Assiniboia in their daily living, which benefits others in the community too. Most recently, the Assiniboia Legion donated $3,600 to purchase adjustable tables on wheels for patients at the Ross Payant long-term care facility.
