‘Matilda Junior’ to be performed by WCS Junior Musical cast

WEYBURN - The Weyburn Comp Junior Musical cast will bring “Matilda Junior” to life, as they return to performing on stage at the Cugnet Centre.

Tanya Cameron said that the cast and crew are “so excited” to perform on stage again. The musicals hosted by the Comp last year were only available online.

Matilda Junior is the story of an extraordinary little girl with extraordinary powers. Based off Roald Dahl’s book, the musical tells the tale of Matilda, a daughter of abusive parents, who finds refuge in library books, which she reads quickly and often creates her own stories.

Things are no better at school for Matilda, where she must face the tyrannical and cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, who believes in Crunchem Hall’s motto: “Bambinatum est Magitum” or “Children are Maggots”.

Matilda finds companionship in her teacher, Miss Honey, who though well-intentioned is also shy and fragile. Matilda has to learn how to stand up against the adults in her world, and in doing so discovers her own remarkable powers.

Matilda’s bravery teaches Miss Honey and her classmates an important lesson: that even though life can be hard, “nobody but me is going to change my story” and “sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty”.

The show dates are Tuesday, Nov. 23; Wednesday, Nov. 24; and Thursday, Nov. 25, and all shows start at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, children ages six to 12 are $5, and under five are free.

Masks are required for audience members ages two and older. COVID-19 proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test is required to attend the performance.
