Wawota will be holding their 17th Annual MS Walk on June 3. Registration will begin at 2 p.m. and the walk will commence at 3 p.m. Last year they were able to raise $14,900. The day will not only help to fund research for Multiple Sclerosis, it will also be a day of fun with a barbeque and various prizes to be given out. The group will meet at 102 Alexander St. for registration and to begin the walk.

The Wawota RBC is collecting pennies, which the proceeds of will be given to the walk. If you are unable to take part in the walk, donations can still be made.

People from 15 to 40 years old are often the ones diagnosed with MS, but it can affect someone at any age. It is a disease that attacks the central nervous system: the brain and spinal cord. MS is a complex disease with no cure, but there are hopes that with enough funding and research they will be able to understand the disease better. This will lead to a cure in the future.

As stated on the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada webpage:

-Canadians have one of the highest rates of MS in the world.

-MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada.

-Every day, three more people in Canada are diagnosed with MS.

-MS can cause the loss of balance, impaired speech, extreme fatigue, double vision and paralysis.

-We don't know what causes MS but researchers are closer to finding the answer.

Currently there are treatments for MS, though there is no cure. These treatments are able to help one manage attacks, to lessen the affects of the disease, and to help live with the symptoms of the disease.

"The national MS Walk is the MS Society's largest pledge-based fundraising event with over 70,000 participants and volunteers taking part in 160 locations across Canada." MS Society of Canada states on its webpage.
