WEYBURN - An overview of the pilot safety initiative between South East Cornerstone Public School Division, the Workers’ Compensation Board and Saskatchewan Association of Safe Work Places in Health was provided at the monthly meeting of SECPSD Board of Education.

Sandra Cripps and Carolyn Griffin, representing the Saskatchewan Association of Safe Workplaces in Health, gave the presentation.

Griffin’s time was reduced due to audio break-ups during her remote on-screen presence so Cripps carried on after a brief interlude. Griffin had noted, however, before losing contact with the board members, that “the work safety team has been nothing short of amazing.”

Identifying workplace hazards, and implementing management systems that feature safety elements were outlined to the board members. Management systems included six elements of care and reporting incidents. Griffin said they felt sustainable systems should be implemented across the entire school division by the end of the year and they had short and long-term goals to attain.

It was noted that discussions had been held for an upcoming Workers’ Compensation Board audit and that SECPSD was generally outperforming similar industries.

The presentation included information regarding the building of a website to reference resources and instructions as to how to navigate the site as well as showing how various sites can work with administration procedures.

“It can be a bit overwhelming with lots of information, so we’ve broken it down to be user friendly,” said Cripps.

There are financial aspects to the program as well, showing a strong level of return on investment which was about $600,000 for the entire division that was dedicated to workplace safety.

Keith Keating, assistant director of education, thanked the presenters and education director Lynn Little noted that where the school division is now on the workplace safety scale, compared with the previous year, was encouraging.
