Police confirm coyote sightings within city limits

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of September 1 to 9: During the reporting period, police responded to 158 calls for service. Many were complaints related to noise, traffic and both business and residential alarm calls.

During the reporting period, police responded to 158 calls for service. Many were complaints related to noise, traffic and both business and residential alarm calls. Police were also involved in a number of domestic conflict calls where property and custody were the issues.

*Police have been actively involved with the schools and the start of school-based programming delivered by the Weyburn Police Service. Cst. Madsen and Cst. St John have been working with Safety Patrols to ensure they have the proper directions in controlling the crosswalks for the children to cross. Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officers have been organizing schedules in preparation to deliver programming to grade six classes at each school.

*Police continue to remind drivers to be mindful of school bus flashing lights and crossing arms. As well, a general reminder to drive careful, especially in school zones where kids are present, as the kids may not be as attentive as they should in their excitement to and from school.

*There continues to be a number of scams reported to police, where individuals are the winner of a large cash prize. They are required to pay something before they collect their prize. These scams take on a variety of different methods but all are a plan to scam people out of their money. Police encourage people not to participate in these because they are usually initiated out of country through some electronic means and are difficult, if not impossible, to investigate.

*On September 9, police attended a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Fifth Street and First Avenue. A vehicle was rear-ended by a second vehicle after its braking equipment failed. The occupants of the vehicle that was hit complained of sore necks as a result of the collision, but no occupants were transported for medical treatment.

*Police attended to a dumpster fire behind an apartment building. Investigation revealed a mattress beside the dumpster had been intentionally lit on fire. The fire was extinguished without further damage and the incident is under investigation.

*As a result of an investigation on a 30-year-old Weyburn resident, a search warrant was executed on his residence, resulting in the seizure of a computer and a number of discs with images of child pornography. The male was taken into custody and charged with possession of child pornography. He was later released before a justice of the peace on conditions to have no contact with children and not to possess electronics or access the internet. He will make his first court appearance in October in Provincial Court in Weyburn.

*On September 6, police received a complaint of damage done to a vehicle in the compound of a local business. There have also been a number of other vehicles reported to have damage done to them while parked on the street. The vehicles are either scratched or a part broken off them. These senseless acts of mischief are difficult to find the person responsible. Police request that if anyone sees someone committing these types of mischief, please report it immediately.

*On September 3, police attended a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle. The accident occurred on Railway Avenue and 11th Street. EMS and Fire attended the scene. No injuries resulted in the accident.

*Police attended a residence where an assault was reported. Investigation revealed that a 43-year-old male had broke into the residence and assaulted a female. The individuals were known to each other. The male, who had left the scene, was located, arrested and charged for breaking and entering as well as for assault. He was released on conditions not to have contact with the victim and will make his first court appearance on October 16 in Weyburn Provincial Court.

*Police attended a local business to investigate a theft. The same business has had a number of related thefts by a group of individuals. Police continue to investigate the matter. The suspects will likely face a number of theft charges when the file concludes.

*Police attended a domestic conflict where the husband was alleged to pour gasoline on his wife and stood there with matches in his hand. The woman got out of the residence to report the incident to police. The intoxicated husband was later located and taken into custody, where he was charged with assault with a weapon. He was held in custody until court the following day. Bryan Jones appeared in court on September 4, where he plead guilty to a charge of uttering threats. He was sentenced to a one year suspended sentence with 12 months of reporting probation, with conditions to keep the peace, to have no contact with the victim and to take counseling as directed.

*Police responded to a call in an apartment building of an individual committing an indecent act in plain view on the balcony of their apartment. Police located the suspect individual and the investigation is still ongoing.

*On September 2, police received a call from a citizen that they had seen a coyote in a central residential part of the city. Police have received a number of calls of sightings of coyotes in the city limits and have also seen coyotes while on patrol. Police remind residents to keep their pets inside in the evening to avoid them coming into contact with a potential predator.

*Police received a call from a local taxi driver concerning a group of customers, who had done damage to his taxi cab as well harassing him upon payment. They taunted him and made derogatory racial remarks toward him. The matter is still under investigation .

*Police laid seven charges of breaching a court order on a 38-year-old male who was released on conditions while awaiting court proceedings on drug related charges.
