Police investigate accident, drug trafficking and thefts

During the week of Sept. 19-26, the Weyburn PS dealt with a total of 113 files. A great many of these were as the result of excessive alcohol consumption.

As a result of a traffic stop on Sept. 19, Weyburn Police members arrested three males aged 18, 17 and 16 for trafficking in marijuana. A small quantity of cash as well as the vehicle was seized. Approximately 63 grams of marijuana was seized.

Members of the city police, along with members of the Saskatchewan SPCA and the Weyburn Humane Society, executed a search warrant at a Weyburn residence on Sept. 20, and a total of 16 adult dogs were seized. As a result of the search, a 65-year-old male was taken into custody for uttering threats.

The police wish to stress to pet owners that there are limitations to the number of animals a person may have in their possession. Please check with the Humane Society or the police if you have questions in this regard.

The city police received a complaint on Sept. 21 of a substantial theft of cash from a business by an employee. The matter is still under investigation.

Members of the Weyburn Police Service assisted the Weyburn RCMP in dealing with a serious traffic collision at the intersection of Highways 13 and 39. City police members were first to arrive on scene and had the scene secured and assisted in dealing with the injured driver prior to the RCMP's arrival.

RCMP investigation revealed that a south-bound pickup truck on Highway 39 was struck by an east-bound car going across on Highway 13, resulting in significant damage to both vehicles. The impact of the collision caused the pickup to spin around and roll onto its side into the south ditch of Highway 39.

The 37-year-old male driver of the pickup was not hurt, while the 86-year-old woman driving the car had to be freed from her car by the Weyburn Fire Department, and was taken to Weyburn General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

While still assisting the RCMP a second unrelated collision was reported at the intersection of Third Street and Highway 39. There were no injuries.

City police received a report of an assault resulting from a domestic dispute on Sept. 22. As a result of the investigation, a 24-year-old local man has been charged with assault.

Police received a report of a theft of property from a local business on Saturday. The property was subsequently located and returned to the business.

While investigating the above matter members of the Weyburn police had occasion to attend a local pub. While there a 31-year-old man patron attempted to remove an item from one police officer's duty belt. He was arrested and lodged in cells. He is facing a charge of being intoxicated in a public place.

It is a serious criminal matter to in any way attempt to remove equipment from a police officer's duty belt.

City police arrested a 39-year-old man for impaired driving on Saturday. Because the subject was serving a conditional sentence he was held in custody.

The Weyburn Police Service are investigating a series of related files involving rocks or other large objects being thrown through various business windows. A total of 10 local businesses were victims of these senseless acts of mischief. Anyone having any information about these incidents is asked to contact the city police, or Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers.

Members of the city police were called to a report of trouble at a weekend social event on Sunday. Two females were identified as having had an altercation with each other. A 26-year-old local female was arrested at the scene and subsequently released pending further investigation. A 28-year-old woman was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital where she was admitted for observation. The matter is still under investigation and charges are pending.

City police cautions people about becoming involved in a fight. What may seem like a simple altercation can easily turn into a criminal act.

While dealing with the above matter a 20-year-old local man was arrested after he attempted to open the door of the police vehicle in which a prisoner was in custody. He has been charged with obstruction and will be appearing in court.

Members of the police were called to a domestic disturbance where an assault had occurred. The matter is still under investigation.
