Wascana Park will soon be the site of a full day of local musical talent, with the inaugural Busker Festival.

REGINA — The Queen City is set to host its first-ever busking festival for families to enjoy around Wascana Lake this weekend, with several local artists primed to entertain.

The first annual Busker Festival will take over parts of Wascana Park on Sept. 18, from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with three different performance locations to enjoy.

The schedule features a range of music genres, including bluegrass, country, Métis fiddle music, and even jazz and rock.

"Busker Festival is an opportunity to experience the beauty of Wascana Park while promoting local Saskatchewan talent in a safe, outdoor environment that is family friendly and open to all,” said Don McMorris, Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission.

A total of 10 performers are currently on the roster, including Regina artist Nick Faye, Estevan-based soloist Kris Dominic Papa, and Amber Jack Fish, a duo that specializes in bluegrass, Métis, Celtic and old-time music.

Also making an appearance will be Saskatoon singer-songwriter Vinny Ve Hiss, and blues artist Artie Balkwell, among others.

There’s no fee associated with attending the performances, although organizers are encouraging audiences to offer donations to artists while they play. Preformances will take place near the Legislative Building, near the Broad Street Bridge, and on the northwest side of Wascana Lake.

The event is being organized by the Provincial Capital Commission, as a tourism initiative focused on promoting the capital city of Regina and its assets.

McMorris said the hope is that the outdoor event becomes a popular fall tradition for the Queen City.
