Approximately 30 people gathered in front of the Estevan Court House on Thursday for a Save the Children demonstration.

Many of them toted signs in an effort to relay their message. Organizer Amber Hagel said she was pleased with the turnout, because it was organized on short notice, and people said they wouldn’t be able to make it due to work.

Had it been on a weekend, she expects there would have been more people.

Hagel pointed out that similar rallies were happening in North America on Thursday.

“I’m just following the lead of other big cities. I’ve seen it a lot on social media that July 30 is #savethechildren where people are just coming together and bringing awareness to issues that involve exploitation of kids,” said Hagel.

Participants were encouraged to wear blue and bring blue signs, as blue is the colour against child abuse.

Hagel expects this could become an annual event in Estevan, because there needs to be awareness of the exploitation of children, and that there have been incidents in this community.

The next edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
