Children from Cornerstone Family and Youth Day Camp traveled the world and the seven seas without stepping a foot out of Carlyle last Wednesday, July 4.
Sixteen kids from the ages of three to 10 began their journey by traveling from the elementary school where their camp was being held to the Rusty Relics Museum on Railway Avenue.
Once they arrived, the museum director was awaiting them with a passport game. Around the museum, including the lovely old home of the railway worker upstairs, were items given to the museum from around the world. Each item included a tag with the country it was from. The youth were asked to draw or, for the older kids, write down the item they saw in the appropriate country.
The kids searched high and low, fascinated by the antique items. Although they were told to look with their eyes and not their hands, some exceptions were made for the spinning of a fancy old sewing machine in the main lobby.
Once the world tour was over, the activities continued with outdoor games planned from the countries the children had just learned about. The first challenge originated from Japan, and was a circle game entitled Big Lantern, Little Lantern. Being an opposites mind game, this allowed kids to place their hands close together while saying big lantern and saying little lantern while stretching their arms apart. The young travelers were far too good at this with few failing to remember the rules. After this; crab races and one-legged races were also enjoyed.
Snack time was a favorite amongst many as, according to a few youngsters, it included "the best lemonade they had ever tasted". Pretzels and cheese were served in the shade, as craft time was prepared indoors.
The smart craft included paper dolls to be coloured in, with a variety of outfits from all around our beautiful planet. The world travelers decorated Hawaiian themed dolls, as well as others from Japan and China.
Overall, a good time was had and the children couldn't be more excited for next week's adventure, as long as they get a nap in first!
