Christmas is a time when the thought of the Salvation Army Food Bank is in the forefront, however, the food bank is used year round and is in need of certain food items to accommodate the needs of their customers.
Community Ministries Coordinator Laura Morrissette said the cupboards in the food bank were full in March, but since then, have receded to the point where they have run out of certain staples.
"We have no peanut butter. To me, peanut butter is a staple because you can do so much with it and it's healthy," she said.
The shelves are also bare of condiments, Kraft Dinner as well as other non-perishable food items.
"Any donations that come in are greatly appreciated," said Morrissette.
Currently the food bank is accommodating one to six customers per week, from single to multi-person families.
Prairie Sky Co-op has been a huge supporter of the Salvation Army Food Bank with donations as well as an in-store credit the Salvation Army has been using from funds raised at the previous Radiothon.
Morrissette has a few ideas on the go for aiding families who come in for hampers.
"I would eventually like to make a cook book with recipes showing innovative ways to use the items received in a hamper," she said. "I think this would be a great way to give back."
If anyone has any easy recipes they would like to submit, they are encouraged to drop them off at the Salvation Army.
"We really appreciate the community. Anytime we need anything, they always come through. I love this community and am very excited to be in this position," she said.
